Be Careful With Your Drinks

Published by at 10:11 pm under Blog,Night Out

Following on from my self-pity post, I have had a mentally messed up weekend, which I have only emerged from today.Spiked

I suspect (as I have no evidence other than how I felt), that my drink was spiked or otherwise tampered with a few nights ago. I had had a few drinks and I know that that could explain some of what happened to me, but to collapse on a street corner, to break down in tears on the phone for no apparent reason, to feel ‘high’ and have the shakes and heart palpitations – I don’t see how I can blame that on a few drinks. It was something I have never experienced before and have no interest in going through again.

Lottie, as you may know, has been in the midst of exams for the past few weeks, so to have me ringing her in bits, desperate for help, cannot be at all helpful. I am so guilty for that, I sincerely am. But that guilt does not compare with the fear that I felt on Saturday, when looking back over what could have happened, what might have been. I have heard many horror stories, far worse than anything I went through, and that has played over my mind all weekend. I just don’t understand why anyone would put anything in my drink. It’s so fucked up. It was suggested today that someone may have been attempting to rob me. Maybe, but no one tried to take anything from me and I was in no fit state to defend myself if anyone had tried.

So, while I don’t see myself having a night out in a bar anytime soon (or at least not without surrounding myself with people I trust), I will certainly be very careful about keeping a close eye on my drink. And I would urge anyone who reads this to be equally vigilant.

Has anyone else experienced this? Have you heard of anyone who went through this…or worse? It’s truly horrible to feel that helpless.

Jesus Darren, that’s a horrible and frightening thing to have happened to you, you poor thing.
I can only imagine the fear and fright you got when you started to feel out of sorts.
I’m sure Lottie didn’t mind you ringing her, I’d say she was just as worried and frightened as you were.
I’m glad nothing nothing worse happened you, which so could easily have happened especially as you said you were in no fit state to defend yourself, and that you didn’t have some sort of reaction to it.
I’ve heard of people doing it ‘just for fun’ to see how the people they spike react to it, but to me this is something sinister and evil, they don’t know what kind of reaction the person may have to whatever it was spiked with.
    Big hugs to you.

Had this happen to me once in the local night club. Was not long in the door and had two drinks. I suddenly felt weird and went to the toilet, passed out and the lads had to jump the toilet door to get me out. I can’t remember much from the night at all. Most of what I do know was told to me. Scary stuff alright.

Jeez, sorry Darren, hope you’re ok. Don’t think its ever happened to me, though I did once get violently ill when only on the middle of my second pint having been absolutely fine beforehand, so maybe it did. Anyway, hope you’re alright and don’t let it develop into a fear of going to the pub, just stick with people you know and be careful.

@Mary Just for fun? There’s some sicko’s out there!

@Anto I had more than one or two drinks, so it could have been much worse. I was very lucky.

@Andy I doubt there’s much could keep me from pubbing, but it certainly makes you think. I’ll be more careful in future.

Yep Darren, there unfortunately are a lot of sicko’s out there, I can’t imagine why or what kicks they’d get out of it, but then again they’re a different breed of people to us.

    Hi Dar,
I’m so sorry this happened to you. Feeling really out of the loop living far away now. I had my drink spiked the night of my 3rd year graduation, absolutely terrifying. Where did this happen?
    Thinking of you.
