One Sunny Afternoon In March

Published by at 5:48 pm under Blog

Wow, it’s a long time since I stuck my head in here to dust off the cobwebs. I’ve got a lovely new header image to replace a picture with far too many memories attached. Both good and bad memories. So, now I look forward to a long and open road of fresh possibilities.

I woke up this morning at a very reasonable hour. I got up, followed my morning routine and even went so far as to put some decent clothing on. I’m currently wearingย  jeans, a shirt, a wasitcoat and a tie. My shoes are on too.

Why do I draw attention to this, I hear you ask. Well, I work a three day week now, thanks to the death of the Celtic Tiger, and today is not one of my working days. So, I have pottered around the apartment, worked on Culch.ie a bit, taken a few phonecalls regarding a potential new job, written some possibly good or possibly awful pieces of fiction and now I sit here contemplative, staring out at the now beautiful late afternoon sky.

It has been raining, but right now…things are looking grand.

Yes, I’m having a contemplative day. It feels as though I’m teetering on the edge of something. No – I’m balancing on a fence. To one side is the past and all the wallowing that goes with that. To the other side is the wide, gaping chasm of the unknown, the future. The future could be wonderful or it could be a painful disaster. So…here I stand. On my fence. Trying to decide what to do next. Trying to work out how to take that step towards the gaping chasm.

I like to think we have no option but to propel ourselves headlong into the unknown.

If anything, it’s good to hear from you again. I wouldn’t know how best to advise you seeing as I’m generally crap when it comes to this sort of thing, but I hope that you find success in whichever side of the fence you decide to jump off of ๐Ÿ™‚

Ah, but we do have options. For weeks I’ve been wallowing. I still am. I’m still taking stock and not making any purposeful forward moving decisions. We do have a choice. We choose to sit still, or step forward into the abyss. I’m trying to work out what I need to do to take that step.

๐Ÿ™‚ And thanks for the comments.

The wonderful thing about plunging into the unknown is just that, it’s unknown. There’s something new to experience be it good or bad, but the past will always be the past and generally it’s best left where it is. ๐Ÿ˜‰

just take a deep breath and dive in ๐Ÿ˜‰

The only way to step is to leap or – as George put it – plunge. Terrifying? Probably. But when it’s such a huge step, essentially from one existence to another, it’s the only way to do it cleanly and leaving behind as much of the bad as possible. Don’t worry about the good – those memories come with us whether we nurture them or not.

    Happy diving, Darr.

But you’ve already taken that first step – you’ve openly recognised that your life needs to move forward. Taking the ‘potential new job’ phone calls is another one of those steps, after all, they only need to be baby steps!

Just try to keep positive – you may not notice the changes happening, but eventually you’ll look back and realise how far you’ve come. ๐Ÿ™‚

Darren, I just want you to know that whenever you are teetering on the edge of a chasm I will be right there behind you to kick you into it like the king of Sparta did to that Persian messenger in The 300. And then I will laugh. That’s just how I roll.

At risk of sounding like a preacher at a 2-hour sermon… I hear ya.
To be honest, I think the wallowing is a necessary part of it all, but so is the jumping off the fence (even if, after a bit too much wine, you find yourself drunkely crawling back to the other side…cough..) to new experiences and opportunities. I’m very much admiring your openess, I wish I was that brave ๐Ÿ™‚

Nice to see you back on here. Feeling positive is the first step to heading in the right direction when jumping off the fence. Good move on the photo change too, the new one is a really nice shot and obviously represents how you’re feeling.

Hey Darren – welcome back to darrenbyrne.com! You have been missed – but I will have a better aim next time.

And let me put your mind at rest. The future – it will be be part wonderful and it will part painful disaster. But once you learn from the disasters then the next wonderful bit is all that much better!

Glad to see you back here (although I realise I’m a bit slow on the uptake). Very much looking forward to reading about the future according to Darren Byrne x
