Some Thoughts This Week

Published by at 9:05 am under Blog,Poetry

This weekend, I’m along to the stag of an old friend.
This week, I hear of the engagement of another.
Congratulations to both. I hope
Their lives are long and fun and run
Into nothing but easy hurdles.

Mine curdles, my life,
My plans of wealth and success, scuppered
By cans of beer, of excess
I’ve faltered.

Where once ideas and ideals stood solemn,
The column has fallen, or is maybe just leaning
Allowing for compromises and alterations,
A heart bent on large rooms relents to
An apartment. Age looms.

I once vowed to stay young, to be Peter Pan –
A petered plan. Now old before my time,
Twenty eight, the new forty eight,
Fine lines and a tired mind. I resolve
I will go to the gym, I will walk, I will cycle,
I will eat better, I will drink less, I will rehab.
I devolve
The thought of the aches from my muscles
Gym? Walk? Cycle? Sorrow!
I pour a glass. I’ll start tomorrow.

    That’s a fine poem, Darren.

Slumps are inevitable, but I’m sure you’ll hit a vein of renewed vigour before long. Apparently 29 is the new 19! Are you sleeping well? Lack of good sleep can be very wearying, and the converse is also true.

    Not forever, Darren.

You wallow a while. And feel like the end has come and crushed you.

But plenty of people got derailed and flung to one side and trains went by into the distance without them.

But not forever. War wounds and disappointment don’t mean you just lie down and stay there. Not forever.

There will be new things, and new plans that will take the place of feeling jaded and destroyed. There will. Take the time to grieve, yes. But don’t think this is it. Rebirths happen.

Here if you need a shoulder, babe. J xx

Darren, you’re definitely a skilled wordsmith. Hope you can work through what you’re in the middle of and come out the other side. Drinking may work today but it’s a short term solution that turns into a long term problem. Look after yourself.

I’m still amazed anyone actually reads this blog. It’s all but dead. Maybe I should resurrect it.

@Stan @ Jo So much for slumps. Since I wrote this little piece, my girlfriend left me and my job became a three-day-week quagmire. But…I’m still smiling…sometimes.

@Sean Thank you sir. I’ve actually drastically cut down on the drink. It’s mostly due to monetary reasons, but health plays a part too. We’ll see how it goes.

Good man, it’s a nice blog though. No point in killing it completely. The poetry’s good too.
