Why Would They Do It?

Published by at 10:33 am under Blog,Movies

Dirty Rotten ScoundrelsOne of my favourite comedies when growing up was the inspired Dirty Rotten Scoundrels with Michael Caine playing the suave and debonaire upper-class con man and Steve Martin playing the crass American swindler. The two fail to see eye to eye and set up a competiton to relieve the young Glenne Headly from $50,000. Caine is almost a parody of himself and relishes the part. In an anti-James Bond role he is a villain we love. Martin too is on fine form and this is probably the last great movie he did (an exception might be made for LA Story and Housesitter).

The movie was comedy genius. So why the hell are they remaking it????? This is the worst news ever and I am not exaggerating. I cannot think of anything that has ever happened or could ever happen that is worse than them remaking Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. No! Just no!

Casting ideas? Probably Will Ferrell and Pearse Brosnan, hamming it up and making a flop. I can see Anne Hathaway throwing her career away by appearing in it. Why do they keep remaking these movies that are still as good today as when they were released?

Disclaimer: Ok, so, well, in my research for this very important post, I have discovered that Dirty Rotten Scoundrels was itself a remake of a 1964 movie with David Niven and Marlon Brando, Bedtime Story. So, ahem, it does tarnish my point somewhat. But still…I dunno…shut up…

    Yeah bur Darren, d’uh, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is a remake of Bedtime Story, a 1964 movie with Marlon Brando and David Niven, so doesn’t that tarnish your point somewhat?

    @Darragh I hate you! A lot!

    See now, no one will ever ever know the truth. Tee hee hee (as they say)

    Darren, as a younger man, I was a sculptor, a painter, and a musician. There was just one problem: I wasn’t very good. As a matter of fact, I was dreadful. I finally came to the frustrating conclusion that I had taste and style, but not talent. I knew my limitations. We all have our limitations, Darren.

    Fortunately, I discovered that taste and style were commodities that people desired. Darren, what I am saying is: know your limitations. You are a moron.

    Oh, Darragh, this is the happiest day of my life! I think my testicles are dropping!

    Darren, do you want the genital cuff?

    Yeah it’s a great film. There ahve been a few pale imitations. Conman films always have the exact same twists! Did you see matchstick men? Predictable rubbish.

    Yup remakes are really annoying… but only for the generation who are old enough to remember the previous one. I wonder how many people of the previous generation gave out about Dirty Rotten Scoundrels… as far as I it’s a remake itself..of some old black and white film.

    A girl band on x-factor did “Wonderwall – by Ryan Adams” last week. Odd generation gap! Oasis are last generation already!

    @Darragh No thank you!

    @John Ignore all previous comments. That Disclaimer was part of the original post. Doyle is just trying to annoy me. Grrr!

    And I heard the Wonderwall song the other night. Not impressed! It was better than Mike Flowers Pops version though. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Frickin remakes, just leave the good filums alone! Between The Wicker Man and Rocky Horror and now this and probably loads of others I can’t think of just NO!

    Wow, I hadn’t realised Dirty rotten Scoundrels was a remake either. Still, they should just fuck off and leave it alone.

    Remaking it? That’s complete toss, it’s a classic, could not be improved upon.

  16. raptureponieson 08 Oct 2008 at 9:42 pm

    No, just no.

  17. Darrenon 08 Oct 2008 at 10:18 pm

    @Kitty I’m sitting open minded on Rocky Horror. The original is so wonderfully OTT, that a remake might get away with it.

    @Simon Yeah, probably. I guess it’s all about the change in generation.

    @Andrew @ThriftC @RP Yip! Disastrous!

    @Ben Ahem…I quite enjoyed it. But still, the original is so much better.

  19. Darrenon 09 Oct 2008 at 3:28 pm

    @YerMan I couldn’t have put it better myself. In fact, I didn’t.
