I Have A Cool Scar

Published by at 2:47 pm under Blog

After Mulley‘s suggestion, I’m going to tell you something stupid:

The day after my birthday, two years ago, I was doing the washing up. There was a lot of glasses to be washed up after the party the previous night. Lottie was passed out in the bedroom with a hangover and I was feeling pretty damn good.

I got my hand stuck inside a pint glass while washing it and as I yanked, the glass broke in my hand. I didn’t feel it at first and the tap was running, so I didn’t notice the gash on the back of my hand. But slowly the sink began to fill with blood. I looked at the cut on my hand and between gushes of red, I saw bone.

Darren's HandCalmly, because I’m like that, I wrapped my hand in a tea-towel and walked in to the bedroom. Then Lottie heard the words she dreads more than any other – “Don’t worry, everything is fine”. They were followed with “but I think I need to go to the hospital”. She sobered instantly and grabbed her car keys.

A few hours and three stitches later we returned home. Two years on, I have a constant reminder of my stupidity. Honestly, I still get nervous washing pint glasses.

    OUCH! I think I’m going to faint…

    It was the phrase accompanied by the tone of voice. Best Hangover cure EVER! Watching the stitches going in was pretty funky though. Damn Doctor wouldn’t let me have a go.

    I got 7 stitches on my chin once. I was in junior infants at the time, and the halls in the school lent themselves to running and sliding along the floor. This particular time I was on the way to the toilet and as I slid along the floor, I caught myself on a raised shore and whacked my chin.
    7 stitches, a stubborn principal refusing to pay ยฃ5, a court date, and 14 years later I collected โ‚ฌ13,000 and put a deposit down on my house.

    I got stitches on my third birthday, tore them out on the way home… still remember it.

  6. Lottieon 12 Aug 2008 at 3:24 pm

    @B’dum – that explains a lot actually.

    Would the fact that I’m a certain famous writer pretending to be an 18 year old shelf stacker not give away more?

  8. Pauricon 12 Aug 2008 at 5:13 pm

    Ah I can see what happened here…a stray glance at ones hand while searching for an interesting blog post…

  9. Darrenon 12 Aug 2008 at 5:28 pm

    @tina Strangely, I don’t remember it hurting at all.

    @Lottie You’re welcome!

    @D2 Cool! Who can I sue?

    @B’Dum Em…

    @Pauric Damn you! Foiled! Tomorrow I have a post planned about dust bunnies in my keyboard. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    I did almost exactly that with a wine glass a few years ago Darren, looked down and realised between gushings that a splinter was still in it. I pulled back the flap of skin and pulled out the splinter so I wouldn’t have to go to hospital. I lived near the Mater at the time, you’d be amazed what you’ll do to avoid going to that hospital.

    Seriously now. Ow.

    Hey Darren,only just found your blog but have sat here and read the whole thing,nearly got sick laughing at the frotting woman,people in the internet place were giving me the universal glare of shut the hell up.Just thought i’d drop a line to say the website is great and i want the last two and a half hours of my life back!!!

  15. Darrenon 13 Aug 2008 at 9:12 am

    @Lou lol – Anything to avoid the Mater. I was lucky there was no splinters in mine. Seemingly it was a clean cut.

    @Damien It’s more an admission of my own stupidity than a moan about my scar. I also walked into a pole two weeks ago. I have far too many more moments like this…

    @Steph I appreciate the offer, but I think Lottie might have something to say about it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    @LeCraic Nope – nothing so interesting. ๐Ÿ™

    @Ferg It’s an absolute honour to have you check in here. Thank you so much, Dude. As for your two and a half hours. Ha! They’re mine now! ๐Ÿ˜†

    I managed to sever a muscle in my finger when trying to seperate frozen sausages with a very sharp knife, while holding the packet. Not the smartest idea ive ever had…

  18. Lottieon 13 Aug 2008 at 1:21 pm

    @Sheepworrier – Don’t ever tell that story again!!! too gross!

  19. Darrenon 13 Aug 2008 at 2:11 pm

    @Lottie Yes, yes…

    @Sheepie Is there an emoticon for ‘speechless’?

  20. Peteron 13 Aug 2008 at 3:53 pm

    Good story but eh was that picture supposed to be a picture of the scar??
    I cant see a thing. Is this some sort of sympathy conspiracy yourself and Lottie have??

  21. Lottieon 13 Aug 2008 at 3:57 pm

    Look very closely Peter.

  22. Peteron 13 Aug 2008 at 4:24 pm

    Ok I magnified this picture to the greatest magnification my PC would allow. I thought I saw it there for a minute – but it turned out to be a hair….

    Ah Ah AH AHHHH. This post is horrifying me! I haaaate blood and guts stories!

    But here’s another one haha.

    I split my chin open when I was 10 in an ice skating rink at a friends birthday party. I blacked out immediately and just remember waking up on a table with a load of adults staring down at me. All the other kids were still on the rink telling eachother that my head had been severed by someone who skated over my neck. Lovely.

    The friends dad brought me to hospital where the doctor tried to tell me he was only putting a plaster on my chin when I could blatently feel the needle going in and out. I was 10, not stupid. Got 7 stitches and still have a wee scar underneath to prove it.

    (sorry, I’m leaving rather long comments today! Apologies!)

  24. Darrenon 14 Aug 2008 at 3:21 pm

    @Peter Shut up you! It’s more of an emotional scar. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    @Annie Feck! Your story beats mine.
